Waikiki Highrise – Electrical Submetering Upgrade Project – Honolulu, Hawaii
We partnered with a Waikiki Highrise in Honolulu, Hawaii to modernize its outdated electrical submetering system and restore reliable remote meter reading across the high-rise property. The existing system used discontinued eGauge2 submeters and HomePlug powerline communication technology, with remote communication no longer functioning and meters requiring manual readings.
The project involved upgrading the property’s 222 electrical panels serving 740 units and replacing the legacy metering infrastructure with modern eGauge 4015 smart meters. Each meter was dedicated to its appropriate electrical panel, improving the accuracy and reliability of individual-unit energy monitoring.
The upgrade included new code-compliant meter enclosures, fiber-optic and Ethernet network infrastructure, network switches, and building-wide communication improvements to support reliable remote meter data collection. Existing CTs were reused where possible, while faulty CTs were replaced and improperly shared CT configurations were corrected.
The project also required extensive electrical panel commissioning, correcting shared circuits and other installation issues to ensure each meter accurately represented the intended unit and electrical panel. Engineered drawings, permitting, and coordination with Hawaii Energy and DPP were also completed as part of the upgrade.
As a Hawaii Energy Ally, we also facilitated the property’s $111,000 Hawaii Energy rebate, helping significantly reduce the overall cost of the meter upgrade while supporting improved energy efficiency and modern utility management.
The completed project demonstrates our expertise in Honolulu electrical submetering, smart meter upgrades, eGauge meter systems, electrical panel commissioning, remote meter reading, fiber optic networking, utility data management, and high-rise energy monitoring.
The result is a modern, reliable electrical submetering system that restores remote meter communication, improves individual-unit energy data accuracy, and provides Waikiki Highrise with a stronger foundation for automated utility monitoring, billing, and long-term energy management.
